PERSONAL DETAILS

DESCRIPTION:
Amadeus is a wizened old man, the years of fighting and stress showing on his face and body. There are numerous scars from thousands of trips to Inferis, some healed while others ache in the rain. Like most older people it seems that the only parts of his body that grow are his ears and nose, making him the butt of many jokes. While this would seem rude to some, he often joins in on the ribbing with jokes at his own expense. If a person can't laugh at themselves, then they have no right to laugh at others. In his mind, at least.

Due to the vast amounts of injuries sustained over his life, Amadeus must walk with a cane when in the human world and usually requires help to stand from a seated position. He finds it humiliating when he needs to ask for assistance with these things and refuses any help offered unless absolutely necessary. In his current condition, he bruises very easily, walks with an extremely noticeable limp and a fall is bound to send the poor old man to the hospital. With each trip he takes to Inferis, his condition slowly gets worse unless someone or something eases his ailments with a healing ability.

Upon entering the world of Lucifer, however, his body takes a drastic change for the better. The usual conditions that ail Amadeus seem to vanish. He can stand and walk without aid, take higher amounts of damage with the durability of the average human male and fight. Unfortunately, without his augments his prowess leaves something to be desired and while he could hold his own against a low tier demon, anything above that would most likely kill him. But with his augments, Amadeus is a force to be reckoned with. The combination of both the Armor and Hands of God, he can power his way through normal demons with relative ease and take out high tier ones single handed by taking advantage of his immense strength and durability. Add the Fountain of Youth to that, and he's agile enough to make most monsters think twice.

PERSONALITY:
As a young man, Amadeus was somewhat of a playboy. He spent countless hours wandering about in the pursuit of adventure and pretty women. While he does his best to remain professional and maintain the decorum fitting of the Templar Grandmaster, he still tends to slip into his old mindset. As they say, "Old habits die hard." While this old man isn't extremely dirty or perverted, he'll definitely make a quip or two about the women that manage to catch his eye. Most of the time, his words will be passed off as the simple ramblings of a man too old to know any better. You can't blame them, though. The things he used to say or do in order to show his interest in a woman would qualify as 'sexual harassment' nowadays. Oh how things were simpler back then.

While Amadeus is a kind, gentle and generally respectful old man, there are darker aspects of his personality that are reserved for those that serve under him and those that align themselves with Demons or their hunters...

As a leader, he is strong, capable and some would say brutal. In Inferis he uses his raw physical strength to power right through crowds of demons, ripping them apart with his bare hands. There are few times where he must use all of his strength against something, and he usually waits on the sidelines while his subordinates to whatever they can. When they begin to struggle, or when Amadeus thinks that their life may be in danger, he will intervene.

A master in diplomacy, Amadeus will do everything in his power to prevent unnecessary bloodshed on either side. While he holds no love for the demons or demon hunters, he will not kill them simply for the fun of it. If they happen to get in the way of the Order's plans, however, he would have no choice other than to deal with them.

HISTORY:
In the years following the first World War, Amadeus' father, a U.S. soldier, took a liking to the country that allied themselves with his own. More importantly, he took a liking to the women within said country. A playboy in every sense of the word, Damien Edge didn't hesitate to make his intentions clear when speaking to the girl of his choice. He was young, handsome and, depending on who you asked, a saint or a sinner. Unfortunately, a bit of both would rub off on his son.

For a time, the man had no trouble smooth taking a woman and sneaking his way out of her bed the following morning. But eventually he found himself wanting something more, something better than a one night stand. All he needed was for someone to simply shrug off his advances, a woman that wouldn't fall for sweet words or riveting tales of heroism during the war. And he found all of that in the daughter of a preacher, Caterina Capello. At first glance, she seemed to be like the rest... Dull, two-dimensional... Easy. But when he tried to talk his way between her thighs, she turned him down every time. This was new, unexpected. And the denial of a more intimate encounter forced him to actually learn more about the woman. At the time, it seemed like more trouble than it was worth. But nothing worth anything in life comes easily, right?

And after several years together, all of that effort brought something wonderful. A son. Sadly, this gift came at the cost of his mother's life. Her labor was routine at first, the contractions, the pressure, all of it was foreseen. But as she began to give birth, something happened. It all happened so quickly, the doctors screaming for the necessary tools, the way they told Damien to look away or leave the room. He wouldn't abandon his love, especially in a time where she needed him. The sight was terrifying, but he wouldn't look away. There was blood, so much blood. Far more than there would be during the average birth. Something had gone wrong, and he simply didn't know what. Was it Caterina who was bleeding like this? Was it their child? Either way, he was terrified. Terrified of losing her. Terrified of losing his son. Terrified of losing them both.

The next few moments were a blur to him. Doctors were shouting for information like her bloodtype, asking for more items, screaming about the possible complications. Uterine rupture leading to an obstetrical hemorrhage. A life threatening situation for both the mother and child. Damien clasped his lover's hand tightly, whispering about how both she and the child were going to be just fine. He told her to pray, to ask that the problem would be solved no matter the cost. And after a brief moment of prayer, a solution was given. In order to save the child, Caterina would go through an emergency cesarean section. While it would increase the chances of the child surviving, Caterina's situation was much more grim. There was almost zero chance for her to come out alive, even with a blood transfusion. The most they could do was to make her as comfortable as possible...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Amadeus didn't know much about his mother. As a child, he constantly asked his father questions about her appearance, her voice, her personality. Damien tried his best to answer them, but every time he answered, he felt the pain of his loss. The boy was much too young to know the effects of his constant questioning. As time went by and Amadeus got older, his father's attitude began to shift. He became distant, angry and changed into a man that simply didn't resemble the one he grew up with. When pressed for details about Amadeus' mother, he would react with violence and anger. He would shout about how it was his fault that Caterina died, his fault that everything went wrong.
Despite the prohibition and wall street crash of 1929, thousands of people, including Amadeus' father, found ways to get themselves drunk. At age 6, he simply didn't understand anything that happened. He couldn't go to school because they were closed. He couldn't eat because there was no food in the pantry and whatever money he managed to get his hands on was swiftly put down the throat of his old man. There was absolutely nothing he could do to feed himself. And while his father could have ceased the constant rumbling in his child's stomach, the alcoholic decided to water himself instead. Because of this, Amadeus began to hate his father. The war hero, the great man, the man his beautiful mother fell in love with was reduced to this. An abusive and neglectful drunkard... If only Caterina could see him now. What would she think?
But just as he began to lose all hope, there was a sliver of light in the darkness. Unbeknownst to the U.S. Government, the prohibition of alcohol created an opening for the illegal production of beer and hard liquor. Bootlegging. This was the opportunity to get himself out of his downward spiral... Children made easy mules for the transportation of goods. Nobody would search a kid... They could fit in small places, carry different products without fear of being caught. He would be perceived as innocent. His first job was easy. Small yet important for feeding himself. There were people everywhere that needed a drink to take the edge off, but they couldn't be seen making their way to one of the many speakeasies littered throughout the city. Instead, the liquor would come to them. All Amadeus had to do was strap flasks under the clothing provided to him and take it to who was willing to pay. After every flask was paid for and left behind, he was to return to his original place and give the money to his 'boss' before receiving his cut. One dollar per flask delivered. As he got older, the money got better as he was able to hold more flasks of alcohol on his person. And at age 9, Amadeus was the one putting food on the table for both himself and his father. While he held no love for the drunk, he wouldn't let his blood waste away.
But when the prohibition was repealed and alcohol was legalized, Amadeus feared that he would be without a way to feed or clothe himself. Fortunately for him, that wasn't going to be a problem. Because of how good he was at smuggling illegal objects and products, the child was recruited to transport other  things. Things that would really see his pockets and his belly filled to bursting. Marijuana, cocaine, morphine, even heroin (despite the decrease in interest) was still a profitable market. It was the easiest way for him to get money and at 20 bucks a trip, he wasn't going to stop any time soon. He began running jobs for multiple organizations as his reputation as a mule grew and by the time he turned 14, he made enough money to keep even the fattest man satisfied.
Organized crime was easy. Making money was easy. Feeding himself was easy. But watching his father squander the money he was given was hard. It was as if every time the man looked at his son, he drank more. He wanted to forget his pain, forget the reason why his love died, forget that he had an obligation to raise his child. That all didn't matter, though. Because right now, Amadeus could take care of himself.
Just as he thought life for himself couldn't get any better, the opportunity to place himself on the list of heroes during an armed conflict showed itself right after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor... The Second World War was at hand, and he wasn't about to let glory slip through his fingers. At 16 years of age, it wasn't going to be easy for him to enlist. The age required for a legal enlistment was 17... Then again, he was close enough for the officials to overlook such a minor inconvenience. After his enlistment, he went to tell his father the 'good news' that he was headed off to basic training. Then one that was done, he'd be off to fight in the coming war. He was going to be a bigger hero than Damien could ever hope to be.
Unfortunately, the reaction wasn't going to be the joy that he expected. The thought of his only son and remnant of Caterina going to fight in a war was horrific. He begged and pleaded for Amadeus to change his mind, to run and hide until the war was over and he could come home. The man dodged answering any questions that Amadeus had about why he shouldn't fight and simply turned to leave until he heard the reason for everything. The reason for his father's drinking, the reason he couldn't look his son in the eye. The reason he tried so damned hard to forget his face... Amadeus looked just like his mother. He had her eyes, her smile, her nose. And every time Damien looked at him, he saw Caterina. He saw the effects of his terrible parenting and he was disgusted. But Amadeus was simply unmoved by the sudden revelation and left his father behind with these words,
"I'm sure she would be disgusted too, Dad."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Amadeus' time during the war was a blur. He fought numerous battles in the European Theater, sustained light damage and watched countless numbers of friends and comrades die before his eyes. There was no glory to be found in this place, nothing like he was told be his recruiter. He was a young and stupid boy who thought himself a man. He watched as people fell to the ground, their blood leaking from large gunshot wounds. He watched bodies explode and their gore fall like confetti due to heavy gun and artillery fire. He was struck with the shrapnel from a stick grenade thrown, surviving only because there were so many others ahead of him that took the brunt of the force. The young man thought that war would make him a bigger man, make him a hero... Instead, he was nothing but a cold blooded killer.

June 6, 1944.

Amadeus had spent three years fighting in the war with the U.S Army 1st Infantry Division. He wasn't able to be sent home, they still needed as many people as possible to fight. If you could hold a gun, pull the trigger and run for your life, then you were still able to take the orders and kill everyone who fought for the Axis powers. It was a miracle for him to survive this long without a serious injury or loss of sanity. But his 'Devil's Luck' would be tested in his last campaign. He was headed to a place that would become the graves of roughly 3000 american soldiers. The beaches of Normandy. Specifically, the eastern half of Omaha Beach.

By now, Amadeus knew all too well about the horrors of war. He knew that people were going to be killed... He knew that he may not live to go home. He knew that there was virtually no chance of surviving the initial charge. But there he was. The chaplain stood at the back of their boat, reading them all their last rites. Some men cried at the thought of death, others vomited due to seasickness. Hell, Amadeus even considered jumping ship and swimming his way back to the U.S. But that definitely wouldn't work.

To this very day, he remembers the words he was told shortly before the doors opened. And he remembers exactly what happened next.

"God bless you all."

As soon as the gate lowered and soldiers spilled out, they were peppered with turret fire. The bullets whizzed past his ears like a swarm of angry bees and buried themselves in the men he called brother. There was no stopping to mourn their passing, no point in carrying the wounded to safety for there was none. He was out on the killing floor and it was only a matter of time before one of those bullets found their way into his flesh. He heard screams of pain, screams of agony, curses, prayers and sobs. He saw the blood in the ocean water and the bodies that floated in it. He was in hell. And the only way out was to take this beach or die trying.

And Amadeus did just that. Before his boots could touch the open sand, he was shot several times in the torso. Everything after that was simply a mystery.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He awoke sometime later in a hospital bed, far away from the war, from the death and destruction. Unbeknownst to him, he found himself in a situation far worse than any war waged by man. Amadeus jerked himself upward and felt for wounds, but there were none to be found. It was like nothing had happened. Like he imagined it all, "Where in the hell am I?" He said, looking at the unfamiliar faces that surrounded him,
"You're one of the few survivors of the first charge on Omaha, Edge. Just about everyone else was killed. You and the others that lived are like this because God willed it. You survived despite immeasurable odds. And we need people like you with us. You know the horrors of war, the monsters man can become. But what you don't know are the reasons behind the madness. We can show you, Edge. You just need to begin your training. Welcome to the Templar Order."
The Templar Order... Soldiers of God meant to eliminate all traces of demonic influence in the human world. It sounded like something right out of a fiction novel, but it was the truth. Around the world there were tears, portals between the world of man and domain of monsters. He was to act as a gatekeeper, patrolling areas for demonic influence and killing every one that associated with them.
Amadeus' lack of a formal education wasn't a problem at all. They taught him everything he needed to know. Math, science, history, literature, foreign languages. They honed his physical condition with a hellish regimen of exercise and training. And at age 24, he was in the best shape of his life. In the human world, he was agile enough to defend himself against ritualists and their demonic partners. And in Inferis, with the aid of his augments, he could tear his way through the most durable of creatures. He didn't need weapons or fancy clothes. He just needed the Hands and Armor of God to survive.
As the years went by, Amadeus' reputation as a Templar grew. And by 35, he was one of the best at what he did. Greenhorns looked to him with admiration and those higher up on the ladder began his grooming for an even higher position. Amadeus Edge became a well known name that was revered in the Templar Order, feared by Ritualists and Demons, and even Demon Hunters knew not to cross his path. The man was a dominant force, the shining tip of the spear. But not even he knew what he would accomplish.
Amadeus continued to climb the ladder, and it was common knowledge that he was the best the Order had to offer. He had the charm, the experience, the wisdom. When the time came for a vote on who would assume the title of Grandmaster, the decision was almost unanimous. Amadeus Edge: Veteran of the Second World War, the best Templar, was the new head. Second only to the Pope, although, many considered his position the one with the most weight.
Unlike the last Grandmaster, however, Amadeus would not simply give orders from his chair. He always enjoyed his work, and looks to his previous screw ups and failures as experiences that shaped him into the juggernaut he has become. Even though he is a frail old man in the human world, in Inferis he is the deadliest in the Tempar Order.
